TheFashionForMen – Shaving your head is an art, for some, it is a scenario they have gone through mentally many times before in reality taking a razor to their scalps. For most, their first head shave is always an impulsive, spur-of-the-moment thing. I confess my first head shave was a bit of both. I did have the advantage of some familiarity with head shaving technique, but I essentially had to figure it out for myself. An excellent guide to shave your head sure would have been pleasant. In that spirit, here is a relatively comprehensive outline of the basics.
- Begin by cutting and then trimming your hair to a short stubble before shaving.
- Next, take a hot steamy shower. The steam will help relax the skin and soften the hairs, which will make shaving the head easier. Allow the skin and stubble to be wet for between five to ten minutes.
- Apply a rich lubricant and then enable it to sit for a short while. You might need to use a little Tea Tree and mineral oil. This serves to help the razor glide more easily while shaving the head, which will help prevent cuts.
- ALWAYS use a new blade in your razor. And if it starts to feel as if the razor is dragging, get a new blade.
Especially since people will be noticing your bald pate, the last thing, you want, is scabby, scraped skin. You need smooth and shiny skin after shaving. - Apparently, you can’t see the back of your head as you shave it, so if you do not want to end up looking patchy …Use a mirror. Also importantly, regularly use your fingers to feel for parts you’ve missed.
Note: The direction of head shaving does not matter because the hair grows in different directions that seem best to you. - Try not to apply much pressure or repeat strokes in the same area as you are shaving as both of these actions will indeed irritate the skin.
- After you are finished shaving your head. Thoroughly wash off remaining lubricant using warm water.
- Then gently rinse with cold water. If you are positive you can handle it, slowly rub your head with an ice cube. This will indeed go a long way to close or calm the follicles and tone your scalp skin.
- Ensure you pat the area dry, making sure not to rub painfully.
- Many experienced head shavers believe in applying after shave, witch hazel or another alcohol based product, this works well to further close the hair follicles and also act as a medical astringent to kill any germs and bacteria. But be careful – Alcohol dries out the skin plus dry skin is a major culprit leading to skin irritations.
- Get your best suit, and ready for doing business. Good Luck with your new style!
Tip:
One way to kill most bacteria, prevent infection and also obtain moisture is to use the traditional natural Tea Tree Oil. It will well condition your scalp and also provide your pate with a healthy sheen.
There are also many creams, lotions and shave oils specially formulated to minimize irritations and itching from shaving.

After washing up, splash some cold water over the shaved area. The warm water you used during the shave opens your pores, which allows your skin to draw in moisture. Cold water will close the pores, allowing your skin to retain that moisture. Also, it cools the skin and feels great.
